Tree
and Farm Update 2008
from Farmer Terry Jones
A
Place for Special Family Memories
Our mission is to sustain our 400 acre farm as a business
and a place of beauty amidst the intensely developed landscape
of Fairfield County. Many of our farm visitors comment that
our hills remind them of Vermont – but without the long
drive to get there!
Our dedicated staff takes pride that we are now growing all
the trees we sell here at the farm.
The
Growing Season
We have worked hard in partnership with nature to produce
a crop of beautiful natural trees for this Christmas season.
The fragrant new spring growth began late enough to escape
the frosts of May. Life sustaining rains were timely (although
sometimes excessive!) Our new practices of using organic mulches
and natural ground covers helped provide even moisture and
protect the soil environment for healthy root systems. A surprise
late summer hailstorm – worst in 50 years – did
not damage the evergreen needles, already toughened up for
winter. Whew!
Farm
Costs
Farm operating costs are up – no surprise to anyone.
Energy, utilities, maintenance, healthcare; a list familiar
to all. And a powerful reminder of the challenges of farming
at the urban edge occurred this October when a motorist struck
one of our farm tractors traveling along Route 110. The tractor
was wrecked, but 5th generation farmer Terry survived and
his working to recover and farm again. For that we are thankful!
Supply
and Prices
Our farm guests have two ways to get a Jones fresh tree –
select a “fresh cut” from our barnyard sheds or
venture to the field and “harvest-your-own.”
We grow the best varieties for natural fragrance and needle
retention: Colorado Blue Spruce (stunning color this year!),
Douglas, Balsam, Fraser, and Concolor Fir, and Angel White
Pine.
